First login & initial setup

Complete the setup wizard, create your first tenant, and configure essential settings.

Overview

After installing Xcellerate RMM, the first browser visit triggers a setup wizard that walks you through account creation, tenant configuration, and basic system settings. This page covers every step of the wizard and the essential settings you should configure immediately after.

Key concepts

  • Admin account — the first user created during setup. Has full system-wide permissions.
  • Tenant — an isolated workspace. MSPs typically create one tenant per client; internal IT teams may use a single tenant.
  • Default policy — a starter set of monitoring and patch rules applied to all new endpoints until you create custom policies.

Step-by-step walkthrough

1

Open the setup wizard

Navigate to https://your-server-hostname. The wizard starts automatically on the first visit.

2

Create the admin account

Enter your name, email address, and a strong password. This becomes the root administrator — you can add more users later under Administration → User management.

3

Configure your organisation

Provide your company name, preferred timezone, and an optional logo. These appear in reports, email notifications, and the web UI header.

4

Create your first tenant

Enter the client or business unit name. The wizard generates an enrolment token — you will use this to install agents on endpoints belonging to this tenant.

5

Review default policies

The wizard pre-configures sensible defaults: daily patch scans, 5-minute health checks, and basic CPU/RAM/disk alerts. You can accept them now and fine-tune later.

6

Finish setup

Click Complete setup. You are redirected to the main dashboard.

Essential post-setup settings

After finishing the wizard, visit Administration → System settings to configure:

  • SMTP relay — required for email alerts and password-reset emails.
  • Agent auto-update — enable this so agents stay on the latest version without manual intervention.
  • Data retention — set how long event logs and performance data are kept (default: 90 days).
  • Two-factor authentication — strongly recommended for all admin and technician accounts.

Tips & best practices

Create a second admin account as a break-glass backup. Store its credentials in a password manager or offline vault.
  • Set your organisation timezone correctly — scheduled tasks (patch windows, reports) depend on it.
  • Upload your company logo early; it is included in PDF reports sent to clients.
  • If you manage multiple clients, create a separate tenant for each — this ensures strict data isolation.
