Welcome & overview
Learn what Xcellerate RMM is, who it is built for, and how this documentation is organised.
Overview
Xcellerate RMM is an open-core remote monitoring and management platform designed for managed service providers (MSPs) and internal IT teams. It gives you a single pane of glass to monitor, manage, and secure every endpoint across your client base — whether those devices run Windows, macOS, or Linux.
The platform is available as a self-hosted deployment (you run everything on your own infrastructure) or as a cloud-hosted option managed by RMM Labs. The core engine is free and open-source; premium modules are available through a subscription.
Key concepts
Before you dive in, here are a few terms you will see throughout this documentation:
- Endpoint — any device managed by Xcellerate RMM (workstations, servers, laptops, network gear).
- Agent — a lightweight service installed on each endpoint that communicates with the Xcellerate server.
- Group — a logical container used to organise endpoints by client, location, device type, or any criteria you choose.
- Policy — a set of rules (patch schedules, monitoring thresholds, automation scripts) applied to a group.
- Tenant — an isolated workspace within the platform, typically mapped to a single client or business unit.
How this documentation is organised
The documentation is split into three main areas:
- Getting started — installation, first login, and a quick-start tutorial to deploy your first agent within minutes.
- Core features — in-depth guides for every module: groups, inventory, AppDeploy, patch management, automation, remote access, monitoring, IPAM+, onboarding, and the plugin framework.
- Administration — user management, system settings, licensing, backup & recovery, and the REST API.
Tips & best practices
- Read the System requirements page before installing to avoid surprises.
- Use groups and policies from the start — they scale much better than managing endpoints one-by-one.
- Enable monitoring alerts early so you catch hardware and connectivity issues before your clients do.
- Check the Video tutorials section for visual walk-throughs of common workflows.
